If you noticed that your teeth have lost their whiteness, turned yellow or are stained, the time has come for teeth whitening!
It often happens that at one point teeth lose their white colour. Since in youth, most of use used to have much lighter teeth, some people perceive this change as an inevitable part of growing old, while others seek solution to restore their teeth former brightness.
Consuming coloured food and beverages (coffee, tea, Coca-Cola), inevitably changes the shade of our teeth. In addition, the use of some medications, such as tetracyclical antibiotics in early childhood or during pregnancy, can result in a substantial discoloration. Injuries, as well as conditions such as dentinogenesis imperfecta (improperly formed enamel) are among possible causes of tooth discoloration.
Should I try to home bleach my teeth?
It’s a deeply wrong to assume that teeth can be whitened at home, with pastes made according to „internet recipes“. All these mixtures contain ingredients harmful to the teeth. Most common are sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), citric acid or strawberry juice. They make the enamel permeable and in a very short time, the teeth treated with those „products“ start suffering from tooth decay or break easily.
Thus, it’s highly important that you don’t do it yourself, without consultation with your stomatologist, because the consequences can be severe.
What should be done prior to the teeth whitening?
There is an established procedure before any teeth whitening treatment.
At the dental exam, your stomatologist will determine whether there is a tooth decay or gum disease that should be treated prior to the whitening treatment.
The stomatologist then proceeds to remove the debris and calculus from your teeth.
Only then, your teeth, all healthy and clean, are ready for the makeover by whitening.
In-office teeth whitening treatment
- Stomatologist places a retractor in your mouth to hold your cheeks and free the aesthetic zone – the space visible when you smile.
- He/she will protect your gums with a special gel and shine a light on it to solidify the gel.
- The next step is the application of a bleaching agent, carbamide peroxide in concentration of 35% .
- The agent can be additionally boosted using a lamp.
- First results will appear in 15-30 minutes.
- If the patient is still not content with the obtained shade, the procedure is repeated once more, in the same duration and manner.
It is important to emphasize that the obtained effects are not lasting and that the entire treatment needs to be repeated periodically. Why is that so? Continuous intake of coloured food and beverages contributes to further discoloration. Also, the teeth lose their whiteness due to the aging process.
