Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, diseases and conditions that affect them, and paradontopathy in general.
At the first dental exam
Upon your first visit to our offices, the stomatologist will do an exam of your mouth and teeth. This will serve to determine the condition of your gums and teeth. Most people believe that tooth decay (carries) is the biggest enemy of our teeth. However, we should be aware that teeth can fall out even when free of any decay. This happens because tooth supporting structures (structures that keep them firmly attached to the jaw bone) weaken due to infection. As a consequence, teeth begin to loosen up and finally fall out.
It is essential to raise awareness about the importance of this issue, as gum bleeding and exposed tooth necks are by no means a harmless situation.
Gum disease – gingivitis

When dental plaque and calculus spread due to inappropriate oral hygiene, the gums get inflamed. Their colour turns to dark red, they bleed, decay and become sensitive to the slightest touch. If in this phase the gums are left untreated, they start to recede (lower their position on the teeth). It causes exposure of tooth necks which become sensitive to different external stimuli. If patients feel no pain, they usually think there is no need to go to the dentist. However, if the patient is to come in this stage, it might still be possible to reverse the process and slow down the progress of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease
Periodontal pockets are the main symptom of the disease. Pockets store bacteria, their products and toxins. If left untreated, it causes bad breath, and at the same time, the gum disease advances and turns into periodontal disease, which may be also called generalized disease of the teeth supporting structures. This means that the infection has spread to the bone, which loses its thickness, offering less support to the teeth until they eventually fall out.
