Dental Implants
You have decided to compensate for a missing tooth? Great! The procedure is as follows...
The first step is to visit your stomatologist/implantologist who would perform a thorough examination to determine whether you are the right candidate. Besides poor oral hygiene, certain autoimmune conditions and malignancies, other contraindications practically don’t exist. The stomatologist would order a 3D recording of the area in which the implant should be placed and after a detailed analysis, schedule a procedure. In some cases, prior interventions should be performed, such as sinus lift, artifical bone grafting, etc..
The procedure is not at all uncomfortable for the patient. As a rule, the patient is given local anaestesia varying on the number of implants planned for placement. The operation can last from 45 minues up to several hours. First, a special borer is used to make a vacant space in the bone in which to place an implant. The stomatologist than tightens up the implant and sews up the mucuous membrane on top of it. Advice given to patients after the implantaton procedure is the same as for other oral-surgical procedures. Hot food and drinks and rinsing of the wound should be avoided, as well as the painkillers known to enhance bleeding, e.g. Aspirin. The patient leaves immediately after the procedure and returns after 7 days for removal of the stitches. The dental implant serves as a subtitute for the tooth root, thus it is necessary to wait 8 to 12 weeks for the implant „to firmly set in“, that is, for the adjacent bone to steadily develop. After that, the prosthetic part of the therapy can begin. You can read more abut is at Prosthetics on Implants page.
Nowadays, the success rate of dental implants is more than 95%. The most frequent reason for failure lies in the poor oral hygiene. It causes collection of food particles and bacteria and formation of plaque around the implant. This can lead to an inflammatory process called peri-implantitis - a very serious complication which in some cases may result in loss of implants and failing of therapy.
